In our Culture, Women spend a great deal of
time, effort, and money pursuing outward beauty and fashion. They do
this, in large part, to obtain attention, affection, and love. They see how men in our culture outwardly
respond to a woman who looks good. Seeing this leaves the impression our culture
truly values outward beauty and to be valued a woman must somehow be outwardly beautiful. As Scripture says, this pursuit always proves
a vanity for several reasons.
The affection and attention men give to the woman in the hot red dress is really only that- just an impression. Men never truly love a woman for how she looks, no matter how immodest she gets. Men may be sexually attracted to her for her outward beauty, but his feelings for her are only skin deep. He may even shower her with attention in the hopes of winning from her sexual favors, but this in itself is not love. Being valued as a mere sex object never leaves a woman feeling truly loved in the end. Whether a man’s overtures are driven by his heart or his hormones can be difficult to ascertain simply looking on the surface of things. She knows this better from the means by which she adorns herself. If you act like a wall flower letting your figure do all the talking in the presence of men, what else can he really ‘love’ you for? If you wish to be loved for your heart, do you work more on the character of your heart than you do your makeup? In reality, whatever you stress and accentuate will become the things you are loved for most. So the Bible stresses developing inward beauty over adorning the outward. Being a terrible person trapped within a pretty package sets a woman up for disappointment every time. Her relationships only turn sour as they move beyond the superficial and her real colors are exposed. It’s the inward sin that becomes her liability. The interior always eventually outshines the exterior. What also makes the pursuit vain is simply time. Every beautiful flower fades with time. If He only loves you for the outward, how do you keep his attention then? How do you keep him from the competition, all those too eager to take him from you? We are told in Scripture of a better way. We are told that the women of old like Sarah made herself beautiful through her gentle and quiet spirit. Her life is an amazing story. Being an old woman well past the age of childbearing and she still captured the hearts of every man in the room. The only problem Abraham seemed to have was keeping the suitors back from wanting to kill him and take her as a wife for themselves. How does a woman in her nineties have such an impact on men, if not through her inward Beauty? The way a woman can develop this beauty, I will save for later posts. Outward beauty really proves to be fleeting, but a woman who fears God will truly find Praise.
