How pornography & erotica can make a person mentally sick.
Chronic exposure to Pornography and Erotica can over stimulate the senses. The natural response to such chronic over stimulation is desensitization. Look at too many naked bodies and one can eventually become bored with this stimulus. Boredom does set in. Recreating new hormonal highs become a fixation for the desensitized viewer; they are looking for something to get off on. More intense images and role-playing are needed to achieve this same high. In an attempt to recapture some of this euphoria, desensitized people add an element of twisted behavior to their fantasy. People looking for ever- increasing levels of intensity can go to some dark places in an attempt to find it. Allow a dark fantasy to captivate your heart and it can turn you into a monster.
How Fantasy can precondition someone to only be sick in the head.
In the world of imagination, thoughts can truly run wild. Fantasies can greatly deviate from reality. Allowing your mind to do this, normal healthy passions can quickly run amuck. The imagination can quickly break with what is socially acceptable, safe, or even practical. What you dwell on and put your heart into can change your taste. Perverted thinking can turn clearly bad things into pleasurable experiences. Masturbating to such ideas only reinforces those associations in our head. Indulge in these twisted fantasies too long and a person can precondition their senses to only be aroused by some sick and vile things. Plain ordinary sex just does not do it for many perverted people anymore. This cognitive distortion of pleasure makes them sick in the head.
Vile passions only become appealing through twisted thinking
A person does not have far to look in modern life to know that normal desires are becoming perverted and unnatural. Many of the fetishes people have are clearly unclean and unhealthy (Rom 1:24); they can be outright vile. The fact that people demand surgical modification to body parts should also be proof enough a person’s desires are becoming unnatural. The idols of the ancient pagan world were notorious for being sexual freaks of nature. The world is headed in that direction if we are not careful. When you exchange the natural use of your body plumbing for what is against nature, something is clearly wrong. (Rom 1:26). The fact that people go after strange flesh should also be a wake up call (Jude 1:7)- animals and inanimate objects. When someone has sex with a vibrator, some blow up doll, or other inanimate object, they have physically joined themselves to an idol. They are getting off to the images within their head and not to a real person. A person cannot be aroused by dead inanimate things without first creating an image within their heart and mind. Arousal always comes down to how you think about things. Thinking is always the key to dispelling any perverted attractions one might have.
Obsession will eventually make you want to act out your fantasy.
Allow an idea to captivate your heart and your actions will eventually follow. Once a fantasy has fully wrapped itself around your mind, what is unreal can really move you to do some crazy things. Allow your mind to indulge in twisted fantasies and God will give you over to do what is not fitting (Rom 1:28). All idols demand to be served. A man must always serve that which He has allowed to master him. As I explained before, images do not satisfy, they only make you crazy. People who have stoked their own passions with idols eventually look for ways to relieve themselves. This unsuccessful resolution with idols can create an obsession in a person; an obsession to act out one’s fantasy. This obsession is fueled by the belief a person will find relief once they act out their passion. So they will mimic what they see and glorify. As the saying goes, ‘monkey see, monkey do’. Of course, the actual reality of living out one’s fantasy never really turns out like a person first imagined it. They may dream of someone being the perfect lover only to find that nobody is perfect. If those dreams are dark and twisted, reenacting them can very well turn into living nightmares. All the more reason to keep one’s passions tethered to what is real and what God intended them to be.
Knowing the truth is the key to being set free.
Healing from such feelings of perversion always begins with calling things for what they are. The truth has a wonderful way of dispelling any myths people hold in their fantasies. A woman who fantasizes about some strange man being a prince charming only thinks that until she gets to really know him. God will often give a person over to live out their delusional fantasy if only to learn firsthand the ramifications of their error (Rom 1:24). You do not have to learn the hard way. Reality has a wonderful way of grounding a person. Anyone in their right brain finds truly sick things a turn off precisely because they know such behaviors to be unhealthy and not good for them. Normal people call perverted things sick because they know them to be so; they see things for what they are.
